[MSG] He asked, "What's this you're discussing so intently as you walk along?" They just stood there, long-faced, like they had lost their best friend.
[AMP] And He said to them, What is this discussion that you are exchanging ( throwing back and forth) between yourselves as you walk along? And they stood still, looking sad and downcast.
[NKJ] And He said to them, "What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?"

[KJV] And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
